Indiana Cops Use DNA from Cigarette Butts to Arrest C6 Corvette Burglary Suspect

This strange story started innocently sufficient on Nov. 17, 2021 when Bedford Law enforcement officers answered a call in Bedford, Indiana to examine a report of a person coming into a auto.

The proprietor of a 2008 Corvette, held parked in his garage, informed law enforcement he hadn’t smoked for a long time but observed two cigarette butts just exterior the doorway of his garage. Immediately after filing the report, he produced sure the Corvette was locked, but two times later, he went back into the garage and discovered two more cigarette butts and ashes in the car’s cup holder.

On May perhaps 18, 2022, a lab report verified the DNA identified on the butts belonged to Zachary Thompson, 25, of Bedford. Law enforcement finally interviewed Thompson on June 8 at 1st Baptist Church, but he told them he didn’t don’t forget moving into the garage or the Corvette and refused to post a DNA sample for comparison.

The following day, a Bedford investigator updated the Corvette proprietor about the scenario, and the proprietor questioned about the cigarette burns on the car’s carpeting, which he claimed price tag him $2,000 to repair the damage inflicted when the suspect discarded the butts.

The investigator, unaware of that injury, forwarded the details to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Workplace, a warrant was issued, and Thompson was subsequently arrested on prices of criminal mischief and unauthorized entry to a motor car.
